I just don't like the State interfering in people's lives to that extent. I think we have a reasonable balance now, which most people would support.

Like I say, what next....?Chairman Chegwinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05121249354671874141noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7746061689746893784.post-47453766519715798062012-02-26T09:01:07.140-08:002012-02-26T09:01:07.140-08:00I know that smoking will never be banned - althoug...I know that smoking will never be banned - although I would support a ban if any govt was brave enough to try. I agree with you though - it's all about education. Health and fitness zealouts are far more irritating than an amiable chap having a quick fag and a drink to go with it!Unfortunately it's human nature to do things to excess.Finchers Consultinghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02585633183853596999noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7746061689746893784.post-71287349432457284502012-02-26T07:58:27.531-08:002012-02-26T07:58:27.531-08:00But where do you draw the line? If increased healthcare costs could justify a government imposition of a smoking ban, could they not similarly justify regulation or banning of fast food restaurants or mandatory exercise regimens? Serious liberty interests would be at stake if a government were to require its citizens “be healthy” so as not to impose health care costs on others.

People do actually enjoy smoking in a lot of cases - they are not all rushing to give up. Individuals’ preferences are largely unaffected by legal rules - hence you still see people speeding in cars (or in my case on bikes!), taking drugs, etc - and youngsters will always experiment and push boundaries. In some ways I'm glad they continue to do so - challenging the rules helps keep the human spirit alive. A smoke-free, drink free environment dominated by fitness and health zealots is not a place I wish to live in.

Seek to educate by all means but personally, I think the ban in public places and workplaces is as far as the state should go.Chairman Chegwinhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/05121249354671874141noreply@blogger.com
